The National Offender Management Service acquired Ashworth East hospital from Merseyside Care Trust in December 2006 and opened a year later as a public sector category C prison. In April 2013, its role was changed to a resettlement prison holding cat C/D prisoners.

7 single storey single accommodation units, holding up to 67 in mainly double cells, there is also a Segregation Unit.
