Remember that a prisoner can’t browse the internet for themselves. Their only sources of news are the prison newspaper (often the Sun or the Mirror), weekly papers like Inside Times, and whatever’s on the TV or radio on the wing – including National Prison Radio, which broadcasts into most prisons in England and Wales.
There are plenty of organisations that offer real, practical help to serving prisoners – JailGuitarDoors, set up by Billy Bragg, gets musical instruments into prisons; the Prisoners’ Education Trust funds distance-learning courses for people inside; and the Prison Phoenix Trust runs yoga and meditation programmes. But unless someone tells the prisoner these things exist, nothing happens. Family and friends on the outside are often the only “eyes and ears” a prisoner has on opportunities like these, so it’s well worth doing a bit of digging and passing on what you find.
