The prison opened 50 years ago on the site of a former military camp and was originally a borstal. It subsequently became a youth custody centre and is now a young offender institution for male prisoners aged 18 – 24.
Accommodation
- B and C wings: 60 cells.
- E wing: 66 cells.
- G wing: 36 cells.
- I wing: The induction and first night wing and current reverse cohort unit, consisting of 60 cells.
- J wing: 39 cells
- K wing: A small unit used to transition prisoners from youth custody, holding up to 16 prisoners.
- Segregation unit: 13 cells and two special accommodation cells.
A, D and F wings are currently closed for refurbishment
