HMP Lewes is run by the HMPS as part of the Kent & Sussex region. It has a capacity of 659 and the #1 governor is Hannah Lane, in post since January 2019.
HMP Lewes is a Victorian prison in East Sussex, built between 1850 and 1853 and originally holding both men and women from across Sussex. It now operates as a Category B reception and resettlement prison, with a capacity of around 659, and also holds some Category C and D prisoners. As a reception prison it takes in a steady flow of men newly remanded or sentenced by local courts, which brings particular pressures around induction, first-night safety, and drug and alcohol support.
HM Inspectorate of Prisons found in a February 2024 inspection that Lewes was caught in a difficult cycle of staff shortages, boredom, and drugs driving rising violence and self-harm, with only around a third of prisoners engaged in education or work. The Independent Monitoring Board’s more recent annual report found some real improvements — prisoners were spending significantly more time out of their cells, and physical conditions had been upgraded through refurbishment — but safety concerns persisted, with assaults on staff up 15% and self-harm incidents up 5% on the previous year. The Board also highlighted a lack of psychiatric cover for much of one summer and ongoing problems with heating and hot water in the prison’s ageing Victorian wings.
