| Type of Prison: | Male Cat C, foreign nationals |
The prison is run by HMPS as part of the South Central Region. It has a capacity of 480 and the #1 governor is David Redhouse who has been in charge since October 2016.
Huntercombe, in Oxfordshire, is a Category C prison specifically for adult male foreign national prisoners, with capacity for around 500–520 men.
The Independent Monitoring Board’s most recent annual report recorded no deaths in custody and noted improved healthcare and mental health staffing, alongside a new multi-faith centre and smoother running of education. It raised serious concerns, however, about the heating and hot water system, which has needed temporary boilers on site since November 2022 despite five years of reports about the problem, and about a sharp rise in assaults on staff, from 9 in 2023 to 40 in 2024, including three serious incidents. The board also criticised how prisoners’ belongings were tracked during transfers, particularly important for men who may be facing deportation and need their possessions on release.
Given Huntercombe’s specialist role holding foreign nationals, families abroad may find the practical visiting and contact details above particularly useful for planning ahead.
