This map shows all 17 Scottish Prison Service establishments, colour-coded by what each one mainly does. Scotland doesn’t use the public A–D security category system that England & Wales uses, so we’ve grouped the prisons by function instead, to make them easier to browse. Use the tick-boxes below to show or hide a group, or just click on any marker to see the prison’s name, its location, and a link through to its own page.
Locations are shown at town/site level, not exact addresses. HMP Addiewell is currently the only privately run prison in Scotland (operated by Sodexo Justice Services); HMP Kilmarnock, formerly privately run, returned to direct Scottish Prison Service management in March 2024. For exact directions, visiting information or the current status of any prison, use the official SPS prison finder.
England & Wales prisons are colour-coded by security category (A–D) on our Prison Map page. Scotland doesn't use that categorisation system publicly, so this map groups establishments by function instead.
