HMP Rye Hill, near Rugby in Warwickshire, opened in 2001 as a privately financed and run prison, operated by G4S. Since 2014 it has specialised in holding men convicted of sexual offences, and it has recently expanded its operational capacity from around 664 to 840 places while also moving from Category B to Category C status.

The Board praised the way the prison had managed a significant expansion and change of category while maintaining stability.
