The prison was linked with HMP & YOI Hatfield and shared the same senior management team. The decision to privatise the prisons taken in 2012 was reversed in 2013, and the prison remained in public ownership run by HMPS; in January 2014 HMP/YOI Moorland reverted to being a single prison It is part of the Yorkshire & Humberside region and has a capacity of 1006. The #1 governor Jennifer Willis, who has been in charge since May 2021.
Today Moorland is a Category C training and resettlement prison holding a mix of adult men and young offenders aged 18 to 21, and just over half of the population has been convicted of a sexual offence, which shapes much of the specialist work carried out there. The Independent Monitoring Board’s most recent annual report found that self-harm incidents had risen substantially and assaults on staff were up 39%, though only one was serious, while assaults between prisoners actually fell over the same period. The Board raised concerns about overcrowding, questioning whether converting some single cells to hold two men was decent or humane, and noted that prisoners serving indeterminate sentences for public protection (IPP) often remained stuck without access to the courses they needed to progress.
On a more positive note, the Board found that staff recruitment had met its targets, record-keeping for prisoners at risk of self-harm had improved, and the prison had moved towards a more motivating incentives scheme.
