The prison is run by HMPS as part of the London Region. It has a capacity of 483, and the #1 governor is Niall Bryant who has been in charge since August 2020
Coldingley, near Woking in Surrey, is a Category C training and resettlement prison for adult men with a certified capacity of around 560. It is notable for a work-focused regime built around on-site industries, including textiles, print and recycling workshops, intended to give prisoners a working week similar to life outside.
The most recent independent inspection, in November 2025, rated Coldingley “not sufficiently good” for safety and purposeful activity, and “reasonably good” for respect and preparation for release. Inspectors’ principal concern was the widespread use of illicit drugs, with 42% of mandatory drug tests coming back positive alongside high rates of serious assault and inadequate supervision on residential units. On the positive side, most prisoners reported being treated respectfully by staff, and family contact and resettlement planning were judged effective, though gaps in offending-behaviour programmes meant some men were still being released without the interventions they needed. Attendance at work and education was found to be too low, with long waits for English and maths provision.
