Type of Prison: Male Cat C

Featherstone, near Wolverhampton, is a Category C training and resettlement prison with capacity for around 670–690 adult men, much of its accommodation dating from the 1970s.

The most recent independent inspection, in September and October 2025, was a difficult one: Featherstone was rated “not sufficiently good” across all four healthy prison tests — safety, respect, purposeful activity and preparation for release. Inspectors found drugs were readily available, with a very high 24% positive rate on mandatory testing, and recorded four self-inflicted deaths since 2022, among the higher rates for adult male prisons, with leaders slow to act on the lessons from these deaths. Older residential units were found to be in poor condition and poorly adapted for prisoners with mobility difficulties, and budget cuts had removed vocational courses such as painting, decorating and IT. Inspectors did praise a well-regarded drug recovery wing and a genuine commitment to supporting neurodivergent prisoners, and noted staff retention had improved even as recruitment remained difficult.

Given the seriousness of these findings, families of anyone at Featherstone may want to check in closely on safety and wellbeing, alongside using the practical visiting and contact details above.
