The prison is run by HMPS as part of the North West Region. It has a capacity of 488 but held 310 in summer 2021. The acting #1 governor is Adam Connolley, who has been in charge since July 2021
Haverigg, on the Cumbrian coast, is a Category D open prison on a former RAF station, reclassified from Category C in 2019, with capacity for around 500 men, most convicted of sexual offences.
The most recent independent inspection, in March and April 2025, described Haverigg as “safe, decent and effective”, with strong links to the local community and an approach that shares cleaning and other duties among all prisoners rather than concentrating them among a few. Inspectors praised an excellent offender management unit supporting men to plan for release, with only 6% of those released in the previous year recalled to custody, and highlighted good employer partnerships supporting temporary release into local jobs. The main areas for improvement identified were long waits for release-on-temporary-licence assessments and for trauma therapy.
