HMP Kirklevington Grange is a small Category D open resettlement prison near Yarm in North Yorkshire, built around a Grade II listed Victorian country house that was remodelled in the 1890s. It began life as a junior detention centre in 1962, later became a young offender institution, and has operated since 1992 as a resettlement prison for adult men approaching the end of their sentences. It is one of the smaller establishments in the estate, with a capacity of around 207, and the Ministry of Justice announced plans in 2024 to add further places as part of the wider expansion of open prison capacity.
The Independent Monitoring Board’s 2024 annual report was notably positive, recording that HM Inspectorate of Prisons had rated Kirklevington Grange “good” — the highest available rating — across all four of its healthy prison tests. The Board praised consistently positive staff-prisoner relationships, well-regarded healthcare, and strong results getting prisoners into employment ahead of release, with 225 confirmed job offers secured during the year. The main concerns raised were aging accommodation, some persistent loss of prisoners’ property during transfers between establishments, and a need for more education around radicalisation risks, but these were relatively minor issues set against an otherwise well-run prison.
As an open prison focused on resettlement, Kirklevington Grange often allows more flexible contact arrangements than closed establishments, including day releases for work; the details above are the best starting point for confirming current visiting arrangements.
