Type of Prison: Cat C male

HMP Lindholme is located approximately 10 miles north of Doncaster on the site of a former Royal Air Force base. The land was bought from the Ministry of Defence by the Home Office in the mid 1980s and opened as a prison in 1985. The prison is run by HMPS

HMP Lindholme is a large Category C training prison for adult men serving longer sentences, typically four years or more, and holds over 1,000 prisoners across ten residential units. It sits on the site of a former RAF airfield near Hatfield Woodhouse, which the Home Office bought from the Ministry of Defence in the mid-1980s before the prison opened in November 1985, and its sprawling, low-rise layout still reflects those wartime origins.

An Independent Review of Progress in May 2024, following a full inspection the previous year, found only limited improvement on the most serious concerns raised. Drug misuse had actually worsened, with 40% of randomly tested prisoners returning positive results in the two months before the review, and inspectors found little progress on safeguarding vulnerable prisoners, staff-prisoner key work relationships, or opportunities for sentence progression. The Chief Inspector described it as worrying that concerns around drugs, progression, and education and training had seen so little positive movement ten months on from the original inspection. Some improvements were noted in cell ventilation, access to healthcare, and information-sharing to protect the public, but no examples of notable positive practice were found during the review.

Given these ongoing challenges, families staying in contact with someone at Lindholme may find it helpful to ask directly about support services and sentence planning progress during visits — the contact details above are the best way to arrange this.
