HMP Long Lartin is a high-security dispersal prison in Worcestershire, opened in 1971 as a training prison before being significantly upgraded in the mid-1990s to hold some of the country’s highest-risk Category A and B men. It includes Perrie Wing, one of the largest close supervision units in Europe, for prisoners who cannot safely be managed on normal wings. The prison has a capacity of around 564, considerably below its original design capacity, reflecting the smaller, more closely managed population typical of dispersal prisons.
HM Inspectorate of Prisons carried out its most recent inspection in February and March 2026, rating safety, respect, and purposeful activity all “not sufficiently good”, with only preparation for release judged “reasonably good”. The report recorded four self-inflicted deaths since the previous inspection and elevated self-harm rates, alongside assault levels higher than comparable prisons and poor staff-prisoner relationships, particularly affecting minority ethnic prisoners. Inspectors also criticised the continued use of an unhygienic night sanitation system and a lack of heating and hot water in many cells. The Chief Inspector noted the prison remained stable under its current leadership but that outcomes for prisoners had not improved enough to change its scores since the 2024 inspection.
