  • 2019 – Planning permission is granted for a new prison near Full Sutton, after a contested planning process.
  • 27 February 2023 – The name “HMP Millsike”, after Millsike Beck, is announced following a public consultation.
  • 23 April 2024 – Mitie Care & Custody is awarded a 10-year contract to operate the new prison.
  • 28 March 2025 – Construction is completed by Kier, making Millsike the UK’s first all-electric prison.
  • 23 April 2025 – The prison receives its first prisoners.
  • Autumn/winter 2025 – Former staff and press reports describe chronic understaffing, safety incidents and a very inexperienced workforce in the prison’s early months.
  • 15 December 2025 – The Independent Monitoring Board writes to the Prisons Minister raising serious concerns about safety, staffing levels and prisoners’ access to healthcare.
  • 8 February 2026 – Mitie announces a change of Director, with Paul Newton appointed interim Director and Sarah Mallender named as incoming permanent Director.
  • June 2026 – Sarah Mallender takes up post as permanent Director.
  • Summer 2026 – Reporting highlights the prison still operating hundreds of places below its eventual capacity, alongside continuing questions over staffing arrangements.
