HMP North Sea Camp is a Category D open prison near Boston, Lincolnshire, standing on land reclaimed from The Wash. It opened as a borstal in 1935, when young trainees built the sea walls that created much of the site, and it later became known for running one of the largest prison farms in the country. Today it has a certified normal accommodation of around 300 and, as an open resettlement prison, focuses on preparing men for release through work and community programmes.
The Independent Monitoring Board’s 2024–25 annual report found North Sea Camp generally provided a safe environment with a positive emphasis on fair and humane treatment, alongside a wide-ranging set of programmes to help men prepare for release, including strong compliance with release-on-temporary-licence arrangements. The main concerns raised were cramped double rooms, some difficulty fitting in even basic furniture, and a lack of on-site facilities for the ageing population with serious medical conditions, meaning seriously ill prisoners often had to remain on ordinary residential units rather than receiving specialist care. Delays in risk assessments by community offender managers were also flagged as slowing down some men’s progression.
