HMP Peterborough opened in 2005 on the former site of the Baker Perkins engineering works, and is unusual in being purpose-built to hold both men and women on the same site, kept entirely separate at all times. The men’s side is a Category B and C prison with a capacity of around 944 across three houseblocks, and the whole site is run by Sodexo.
HM Inspectorate of Prisons visited the men’s prison in October 2024 and found that a lack of funding for basic security measures, such as netting over exercise yards, was undermining efforts to keep drugs out, with positive drug test rates remaining high. Assaults between prisoners had risen, though assaults on staff had fallen, and while teaching quality had improved, staff shortages meant not all available education places could be used, leaving some prisoners locked up for longer than they should be. The Care Quality Commission separately found a breach of safe care standards after prisoners newly arrived at the prison faced delays getting their medication and inconsistent overnight clinical monitoring.
