HMP Send is a closed female prison run by HMPS as part of the London Region. It has a capacity of 202 and the #1 governor is Esther Dainton who has been in post since November 2020
HMP Send, in Surrey, began life in 1962 as a junior detention centre, later became a men’s training prison in 1987, and was demolished and rebuilt before reopening in 1999 as a closed prison for women. It now specialises in the long-term care and rehabilitation of women, with an operational capacity of around 202 to 282 depending on configuration.
HM Inspectorate of Prisons visited in March and April 2025 and rated Send “good” for safety and respect, with purposeful activity improving to “reasonably good” and preparation for release improving to “good” — a strong and improving set of results. Inspectors credited excellent leadership and a clear focus on rehabilitation for the prison’s success, highlighting expanded education, proactive offender management, strong family support programmes, and low levels of both self-harm and violence. Women at Send also benefited from generous time out of their cells to take part in activities.
For families staying in touch with a woman at Send, the Send Family Link service and the contact details above are good starting points for arranging visits and getting support.
