HMP Sudbury is a Category D open prison in Derbyshire, established in 1948 on the site of a former US Air Force hospital built during the Second World War. It holds up to 621 adult men who are assessed as low risk and nearing the end of their sentence, and focuses heavily on preparing them for release through work and community engagement.

The Independent Monitoring Board’s most recent annual report found low levels of violence and self-harm at Sudbury, and praised education standards, with results in English and maths described as reaching a high level. The main concern raised, repeatedly, was the quality of the prison’s ageing accommodation, alongside staffing challenges linked to changes in how prisoners are categorised, which prompted a staffing review in late 2025. The Board also flagged pressure on approved premises places for people about to be released, with demand outstripping supply nationally. On a positive note, new wifi and educational technology have been installed, and the prison has been expanding its links with training providers and release-on-temporary-licence opportunities.
