The prison is run by HMPS as part of the North West region. It has a capacity of 1192 and the #1 governor is Mahala McGuffie who has been in charge since October 2023.
HMP Wymott opened in 1979 near Leyland in Lancashire as a Category C training prison and has since grown into one of the larger sites in the North West, with a certified normal accommodation of around 1,100 men, including both mainstream prisoners and a segregated wing for sex offenders. The prison suffered a major riot in 1986 that caused extensive damage, leading to substantial rebuilding, and it is currently the subject of a £140 million redevelopment programme aimed at modernising accommodation and tackling long-standing overcrowding.
An HM Inspectorate of Prisons report in late 2023 identified a number of priority concerns, including officers frequently unavailable to run a full regime, resulting in cancelled activities and appointments, ready availability of drugs alongside inadequate searching and testing, and infrastructure in need of significant investment. Inspectors also found education, skills and work provision insufficient for the size of the population, and mental health and substance misuse support falling short of what prisoners needed, with an action plan subsequently submitted to address the findings.
