Type of Prison: Male Cat D

The prison was going to be privatised in 2013 but that decision was overturned and it remains under public operation. It is part of the Yorkshire & Humberside region and has a capacity of 378. The #1 governor is Michael Mills, who was appointed  in September 2019.

Hatfield, near Doncaster, is a Category D open prison and young offender institution operating across two sites, Hatfield Main and Hatfield Lakes, with capacity for around 360–380 men.

The Independent Monitoring Board’s most recent annual report gives a strikingly positive picture: no self-inflicted deaths, self-harm, violence or use-of-force incidents were recorded at all during the year, healthcare was rated excellent by the Care Quality Commission with no breaches found, and Hatfield was the highest-performing prison in the country for getting men into work after release, with almost 63% in employment six months on and virtually all released with accommodation arranged. The board’s main concerns were practical rather than about safety: batches of prisoners arriving who were not properly prepared for open conditions had increased contraband finds and complaints, and repairs at the Lakes site were often delayed because they depended on a neighbouring prison’s maintenance team.

This is one of the more reassuring reports in the estate; families may still want to check a prisoner has been assessed as ready for open conditions, alongside using the practical visiting and contact details above.
