After your first night, you’ll go through induction – a structured introduction to how the prison works, so things feel a bit less unfamiliar.
This usually covers the daily routine, what education, work and other programmes are on offer, how visits work, who’s who among the staff, and how to raise a concern or complaint. It’s also your chance to ask questions – about anything from healthcare to religious observance to what happens next with your case.
How quickly you move from induction into the prison’s main routine depends on the individual prison, but staff should explain what to expect and when.
