HMP Lowdham Grange is a Category B training prison in Nottinghamshire, built on the site of a former borstal and opened in 1998 as a privately financed and managed prison, with a capacity of around 920. Following an inspection in 2023 found the prison unsafe, with rising violence and staffing problems, His Majesty’s Prison Service took over full operational control from the private contractor on 1 August 2024.

A follow-up review in May 2026 found the new leadership team had made considerable improvements over the previous year: drug supply had been reduced through tighter security, healthcare had stabilised under a new provider, the backlog of prisoner adjudications had nearly halved, and the visits booking system had been modernised. However, inspectors also found use of force had risen by 79% since the full 2025 inspection and self-harm rates had increased by half, remaining a significant concern, with some prisoners with disabilities still lacking adequate support. Overall, the review found good progress in most areas but insufficient progress specifically on violence and self-harm prevention.

Given the prison’s recent change in management and ongoing safety concerns, families may find it useful to ask directly about a loved one’s wellbeing during contact — the details above are the best starting point for arranging visits.
