- 1958 – The site, on the former RAF Swinderby airfield, opens as a borstal for boys.
- 1985 – Reopens as an open prison for adult men.
- 2001 – Refitted as a semi-open women’s prison; recategorised as closed in 2009.
- 1 June 2011 – Closes as a women’s prison and reopens as Morton Hall Immigration Removal Centre.
- 2014–2017 – Four detainees die in custody at the IRC over this period, prompting inquests and continuing scrutiny of the centre.
- March 2020 – HMIP publishes an inspection of the IRC raising concerns about rising self-harm and the use of overnight cell-locking.
- 22 July 2020 – The Home Office and HMPPS announce the IRC will close, citing concerns about the impact of long-term detention.
- 23 July 2021 – Morton Hall IRC formally closes.
- December 2021 – The site reopens as HMP Morton Hall, a Category C prison for adult male foreign national offenders.
- 30 October–9 November 2023 – HMIP carries out its first full inspection of the prison since reopening.
- 26 February 2024 – HMIP publishes its findings: good ratings for safety and respect, but purposeful activity and preparation for release both rated not sufficiently good.
